Frequently Asked Questions
What is sight reading?
Sight reading, in short, is reading music at first sight. It is from doing this, that we discover what the band can play well and what they cannot play well. It is the basis of our decision on what we would perform for a concert. We play the piece and discern whether we will be able to perform the piece with accuracy. A general rule of thumb, if the band can get all the way through a piece of music and play it fairly decently, then it would be a consideration to perform it down the road.
Why are you sight reading for MPA now? Isn’t MPA in the spring?
We begin sight reading now, so we can start to play as many selections as possible. We have many pieces in our library and normally will get through 2 or 3 pieces during a class period.
When is MPA?
For High School it is March 27 – 31 at Hickory Ridge High School. Each band second semester would perform on only one of those days.
Why does the band attend MPA?
This is the same reason we attend marching band competitions. We want to learn how to get better as student musicians and as an ensemble. It is adjudicated by highly qualified music educators. We equate it to a student’s End of Grade or End of Course Test. It is an excellent barometer for how well the students are learning in class.
Is it required for students to attend MPA?
If the decision is made for a band to attend, then yes, it is required.
Saturday, January 7, 2017 – All-District Honor Band Auditions – South Point High School – Belmont, NC. Students auditioning for All-District will report to Porter Ridge High School Band Room at 7 AM. The students that are auditioning for all-district have already made a payment to attend and this has been mailed off to the Auditions Chair. Approximate return to Porter Ridge is between 4 pm and 5 pm.
